According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), 42.3 million Americans are hitting the road this Fourth of July holiday and traveling 50 miles or more from home between Tuesday, July 3 and Sunday, July 8. That’s a 4.9 percent increase over the 40.3 million people who traveled last year. AAA says increase is due to the fact that the Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year, giving travelers more departure and arrival options.
Planes, trains and automobiles
So what is the preferred method of transportation for these 42.3 million Americans? No surprise, the automobile is king. After all, the family road trip is about as American as you can get. This year, an estimated 35.5 million people (84 percent of Independence Day travelers) plan to get there by car. That’s a four percent increase over the 34.1 million people who traveled by auto last year.
Slightly more than 3.2 million (eight percent of holiday travelers) have elected to fly, a more than nine percent increase over the 2.9 million air travelers in 2011. The remaining eight percent of holiday travelers are expected to use other modes of transportation, including rail, bus and cruise ship, accounting for 3.6 million travelers – a 10 percent increase over last year and the second highest volume in the past 10 years.
